Highlighting The Roots and Triumphs Forged by Women Within Rap
The Case
Women have always been a part of Hip-Hop since its inception in the 1970s. However, the genre has always been a male dominated genre. From lyrics to music videos, male rappers such as Emeniem and Nelly have made misogyny and female objectification a major part of their personas. As a result, the accomplishments of these women have not been valued as much as their male rappers within the music industry.
Insights
1) From Roxxane Shanté to Megan Thee Stallion, Female rappers have pushed the envelope of creativity in terms of lyricism, fashion, and much more.
2) Many female rappers have disrupted the misogynistic landscape of the genre by incorporating feminist themes within their music such as sex positivity, female empowerment, and other vital subjects.
3) Female rappers have had a major influence within not just rap, but the music industry as a whole.
The Solution
Produce a coffee book publication that highlights the history of female rappers and their influence on music.
Putting their Mark on the Map
Historically, Hip Hop first found its roots within the heart of brooklyn and the Bronx. As many can see, Rap is a predominantly male genre where many have become successful through the utilization of misogyny. In this creative, we flip the bird to this notion as we place imagery on top of NYC subway maps to pay homage to the roots of the genre while celebrating the achievements of female rappers.
